Demographic information

Guatemala is located in the North of the cluster of Republics that form the Central American Isthmus. Guatemala borders the Republic of Mexico to the North and West and with Honduras and Belize to the East. The Pacific Ocean is to the South and the Atlantic Ocean in the East.

Guatemala’s mountainous geography creates a variety of climates in which there are no extreme temperatures. For this reason Guatemala is often called the “Country of Eternal Spring”. There are two distinct seasons: summer or the dry season from November until April and the winter or wet season, which lasts from May until October.

  • Guatemalan society consists of various socio-cultural and linguistic groups, amongst them 21 Mayan groups, as well as Garífunas, Xincas and Ladinos (who are of mixed Indigenous and European decent).
  • Indigenous descendants of the great pre-Hispanic Mayan civilization are the majority representing 43% of the Guatemalan population. For this reason Guatemala is a pluri-cultural and multi-lingual country.
  • The average age of the Indigenous population is 20.9 years; amongst the non-Indigenous population the average age is 22 years.
