Welcome to ActionAid
Guatemala Web Site!

We are glad to share with you ActionAid Guatemala’s challenges and achievements, from the beginning of our work in benefit of the poorest people of the country; information about poverty in Guatemala; our Strategic Approach, as well as links to related themes.

According to the information contained in this Site you will find that every day the Guatemalan people, women and men, are striving to build a democratic and peaceful society after 36 years of internal conflict that concluded with the signing of the Peace Accords between the government and guerrilla forces in December 1996.

Currently 60% of Guatemalans live in extreme poverty, with the indigenous population of the country being the worst affected. Issues such as government inefficiency, corruption and lack of social spending as well as international events as the collapse in coffee prices, add further to the problems.

Thanks to our international contributors and the coalition with other National Organizations we have supported, accompanied and cooperated with some of the poorest families in the country, in processes such as education, health, production, training, gender equity, and empowerment, giving a better life quality to Guatemalans. At the same time we are working on advocacy to put pressure on the government to amend public policies and budgets to better serve the needs of the poor.

Thousands of people in Guatemala and around the world strive to fight poverty and its causes, for a better present and a more promising future for Guatemalans. You can join us in this effort.

From all ActionAid Guatemala team,
thanks for visiting our site!
